If you have a break in your tooth or a filling so large the remaining tooth is weak you may need a crown. A crown is a cover that goes over your tooth to protect it from further damage. A crown can also be used with a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
Crowns come in a variety of materials. The most natural-looking crown is the porcelain crown. Porcelain reflects light the same way natural teeth do, which allows it to blend in better. Other materials that may be used include: Porcelain fused with metal, metal alloys, gold, and composite resin. A porcelain or composite crown can be created in our office using the CEREC system. Crowns made of other materials need to be custom-made at a dental laboratory.
CEREC Same-day crowns
The CEREC (CERamic REConstruction) system allows us to place crowns during the same visit. Benefits include:
Same-day Service | You no longer need to wait weeks for your completed crown to be placed! You can skip the temporary crown entirely!
Porcelain Material | CEREC crowns are made of porcelain, which looks just like your natural teeth.
Quality Control | Your crown is designed on a computer screen right in front of you. You can see the custom craftsmanship being done on your behalf.
Exact Copy | If you have a snore guard, Invisalign aligner, partial denture or retainer which fits to a tooth needing a crown the shape of the existing tooth can be exactly copied. Therefore, there is no need to get a new appliance because the old one does not fit the new crown.
Long Lasting | With care, CEREC crowns can last 15-20 years or longer!
Traditional Crowns
Traditional crowns are made in a laboratory, many times by a master ceramist (if porcelain, or porcelain-metal-fused). Benefits include:
Aesthetics | Traditional crowns can look the most like natural teeth, because
they are hand-made. They are a great choice when you need crowns on your front teeth.
Long-Lasting | With care, traditional crowns can last 15-20 years or longer!
How it works:
- Make an appointment. During your visit, we will examine you to determine if crowns are right for you.
- CEREC | We can take digital images to create your crown, and then place the crown, all during the same visit.
- Traditional | We can prepare your tooth, take a mold, and send it to the laboratory. It may take two – three weeks to receive the constructed crown. You will have a custom provisional restoration while your case is completed. During your next appointment, we will place and bond your crown to your tooth.
- Treatment and steps may vary, depending on your personal need.
