Are the Foods You Eat Damaging Your Teeth?

Brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist is an ideal way for you to have a smile that's beautiful as well as healthy. Yet there is more that you can do as well. By knowing what foods and beverages can be harmful to your smile, you can make wise decisions about what you eat and how to better take care of your teeth.

The team at our Orange County cosmetic dentistry center would like to briefly go over some of the foods and beverages that can do harm to your smile.

Your Smile is Sometimes What You Eat

Even though cleanings and dental treatments can help restore your smile and make it look great, the best care is often preventative care. That's why cosmetic dentists stress to their patients that they should watch what they eat. Foods can have interesting effects on overall wellness and appearance of your smile, so knowing what foods and beverages can be harmful and how you can avoid certain dental problems is very important for lasting dental wellness.

Foods That Can Cause Tooth Stains

There are a number of common foods and beverages that can cause stains and discoloration. These include:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Cola
  • Curries
  • Blueberries
  • Beets
  • Carrots

By avoiding the above or cleaning your teeth after ingesting the above, you can avoid having to undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures to remove tooth stains.

Foods That Can Cause Tooth Erosion

Tooth erosion is a dental problem caused by having an acidic pH in the mouth. This acidic pH results in the steady destruction of tooth structure. Some of the following foods can raise the acidity within the mouth, so be wary:

  • Coffee
  • Citrus juices and fruits
  • Apples and apple juice
  • Soy sauce
  • Vinegar
  • Carbonated beverages

Be sure to clean your teeth thoroughly after having any of the above. Also, be sure to drink water and stay hydrated to help maintain a healthy pH within the mouth.

Foods That Can Cause Tooth Damage

Some foods can result in tooth damage if you're not careful. The most obvious and notorious example is popcorn. The popped kernels are soft and delicious whereas the unpopped kernels can crack or chip your teeth. Eat popcorn slowly so you can avoid accidental breaks in tooth structure.

The same caution needs to be taken with hard and/or sticky candies. Hard candies and sticky candies have been known to damage tooth structure and even cause dental restorations such as fillings to become dislodged. And of course, sugary foods will also result in tooth decay if you're not careful.

Treatments to Consider for Aesthetic Problems

There are plenty of cosmetic procedures to consider for addressing tooth stains. The most effective and popular is teeth whitening, which helps bleach the stains and leaves the smile looking great. Porcelain veneers can also be effective for major staining of the teeth and for minor chips and cracks that are aesthetic in nature.

Treatments to Consider for Tooth Damage

For tooth damage, tooth erosion, and tooth decay, there are many different dental restorations that can prove helpful, including fillings, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

For cases in which a tooth is so damaged that it cannot be saved, the tooth may need to be extracted. In those instances, dental implants can be placed in order to secure a dental appliance (dental bridge, denture) that fills the gap in a patient's smile.
